Wing Ming Choi, Head of Sports Law at Culbert Ellis, joined barrister and host Akash Gohil of 1EC Chambers and fellow sports lawyer Ben Millward on the inaugural episode of The Red Verdict. It’s a new podcast that looks at football and sport through a legal, financial and technical lens.
The first episode, Manchester City Guilty: What Now?, covers the Premier League Commission’s published decision to uphold 114 of the 115 charges brought against the club in February 2023. Subject to Manchester City’s appeal, it’s the most significant disciplinary ruling English top-flight football has ever seen. The panel talks through what it could mean for the game.
What the episode covers
- How the decision was reached, and why it looks so different from City’s successful challenge to UEFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2020
- The sanctions open to the Commission, which range from fines and points deductions to a recommendation of expulsion
- Where an appeal is likely to focus, and why sanction, not liability, is the real battleground
- What the case means for other clubs, commercial partners, lenders and the new Independent Football Regulator
And of course, given the title of the podcast, a few Manchester United memories made it in too!
“It was a real privilege to join Akash and Ben for the very first episode of The Red Verdict. The Manchester City case reaches far beyond one club. It’s about how football’s financial rules are enforced, and that matters to everyone who invests in, partners with or regulates the game. Congratulations to Akash on a brilliant launch.”
Wing Ming Choi, Head of Sports Law
“It was a privilege to have Wing Ming Choi join me, alongside Ben Millward, for episode 1 of The Red Verdict. These are big and unprecedented issues with wide ramifications for clubs, players, partners and the new regulator, and I was delighted to explore the legal elements in detail in such a thoughtful discussion with two excellent sports lawyers. I look forward to following the case closely and to welcoming Wing Ming and Ben back to the podcast as matters develop.”
